Angela Lea is an artist C/- genetics, representing subjects that resonate with her at soul level, with enthusiasm, knowledge and clout. She is intrinsically passionate about the constant in her world, horses - which in her artworks is a metaphor for self. All things equine are expressed in her mixed media pieces principally "because they are a therapeutic reflection of my experience with them and self."
SUBJECTS
Angela's creative filter is peppered with the colour, energy, temperament and beauty she associates with the animal, she understands so well. As an equestrienne with over 40 years in the saddle and a professional working with them, she is extremely well informed.
Her creative methods and materials have been honed to capture horses for what they really are – "which is far more than a noble servant of humans". Other frequent subjects feature the landscapes she has visited (plus the collection of leaves that catch her attention on her travels), cats, flowers, self portraiture and birds (including their feathers).
METHODS & MATERIALS
Her useful box is extensive with mediums such as acrylic, gouache, ink, pastel, conte, pencil and charcoal. She prefers her references to be captured by her own camera. She spent much of her teen years painting with photographic realism, then expressively evolving in senior secondary school and further at University. As she matures her work has become somewhat more esoteric and abstract.
Angela works informed by an extensive arts education with achievement gongs beginning in her senior secondary school year, when she was invited to represent the Ballarat region in the ‘Top Arts’ Show for high achieving Victorian art students. She was awarded the Ballarat Grammar School Prize for Art in Year 12 and granted Academic Achievement Awards.
At tertiary level she has attained two undergraduate degrees in the arts and a postgraduate diploma. She possesses the University of Ballarat’s Bachelor of Visual Arts – Painting. In 1990 she was selected to represent the institution at the National Student Art Award. At the tier one University of Melbourne, she gained a Bachelor of Arts – majoring in Art History. She was accepted into The University of Melbourne's Postgraduate Diploma in Arts (Art Curatorial Studies), and subsequently went on to acquire a Graduate Diploma of Education (Secondary). In recent years she was accepted into Federation University's Bachelor of Arts (Creative Arts) (Honours) which unfortunately was derailed by the pandemic. She has been exploring her Honour's research proposal privately, in the studio.
Extensive domestic and international travel to visit art galleries, along with broad life experience enriches her work. She has embarked on solo shows and participated in group exhibitions and been successful in competitions. Her work is held in private and corporate collections around the world. Her studio is in Hamilton, Western Victoria, Australia and she welcomes visitors by appointment.
